More Lisbon

So if anyone was to ask me "Should I go see Lisbon?" I would answer with a whole-hearted 'yes!'

An especially big 'yes!' if you like grilled fish, and the 'yes' becomes even more emphatic if you like grilled sardines. I like grilled sardines. I even eat them in France.

What's even better, you can eat them in great little restaurants that look like this:

which is called "Vinho verdo" or green wine. It's very young, very refreshing white wine with a low alcohol content that is served well chilled. Trust me; after a day stomping the pavement up and down the hills of Lisbon it's better than beer (and coming from me, that's a high compliment). Two of us put down a bottle at lunch without even realizing; with 9% alcohol and accompanied by a few glasses of water you don't even notice the effects.

So yes, the food was good -- even great. But it's Mediterranean food without the Italian twist; you won't find much shredded basil or grated Parmesan on top, and olive oil is not considered an equal to salt and pepper when seasoning. Think more green salad, rice, maybe some grilled vegetables, and the effects of we-colonized-Brazil-so-steak-is-a-food-group. Excellent, excellent, beef. Delicious fish. Vinho verdo. Some great, rich red wines.

I drool. I belch. I want to go back.
